Chapter
5: The Watcher’s Call
The
morning sun crept over Brightwood Academy, casting golden rays that seemed
incongruous with the weight Ethan felt in his chest. The book sat on his desk,
an enigmatic reminder of his responsibility. Its cover was inert now, the sigil
no longer pulsing, as if waiting for his next move.
Ethan
stared at it, torn between fascination and trepidation. The Keeper’s words
echoed in his mind: The Watcher will guide you. Yet, how was he supposed
to find someone whose very existence was shrouded in mystery?
He
stuffed the book into his bag and headed to his first class. The day passed in
a blur of half-heard lectures and fleeting conversations. His thoughts were
tethered to the hidden world below the library and the urgent mission he had
unknowingly embraced.
It
wasn’t until late afternoon, as he passed the academy’s clock tower, that
something unusual caught his eye. A bird, larger than any he’d seen before,
perched on the spire. Its feathers shimmered like molten silver, and its eyes
glowed faintly. Ethan stopped, heart racing, as the bird turned its gaze
directly toward him.
The
creature let out a piercing cry, the sound resonating in Ethan’s chest like a
distant echo of the Nexus. Then it spread its wings and took flight, circling
once before gliding toward the library.
A
surge of adrenaline pushed him to follow. He sprinted across the courtyard,
weaving through students, and reached the library just as the sun dipped below
the horizon. The bird perched on the library’s roof, its glowing eyes fixed on
him before it vanished into the shadows.
Ethan
hesitated, staring up at the building. The faint hum of the Nexus seemed to
pulse through the air, a subtle but insistent call. Taking a deep breath, he
stepped inside.
The
library was empty, its vast rows of shelves cloaked in the dim glow of overhead
lights. The soft rustle of unseen movements prickled his senses. Clutching the
strap of his bag, he made his way to the back where the archway had appeared
before.
As
he reached the corner, the bird reappeared, perched atop a crooked shelf. Its
glowing eyes watched him intently. Ethan took a cautious step closer.
"You’re
leading me somewhere, aren’t you?" he whispered.
The
bird tilted its head, then flapped its wings, sending a faint ripple through
the air. The archway materialized once more, its glyphs glowing faintly.
Ethan’s pulse quickened. Without hesitation, he stepped through.
The
descent down the spiraling staircase felt different this time. The whispers
were clearer, their tones urgent yet melodic, as if guiding him. When he
reached the circular platform, the domed chamber expanded before him, unchanged
yet brimming with energy.
The
crystalline orb pulsated rapidly, and the Keeper materialized once again.
"You’ve
come seeking the Watcher," they said, their voice resonating deeply.
Ethan
nodded. "How do I find them? The book showed me a name but nothing
else."
"The
Watcher is not a single being," the Keeper replied. "It is a mantle,
passed through generations. The current Watcher resides where the threads are
weakest, protecting what remains. You must travel to the edge of the
Nexus."
The
orb flared, projecting a shimmering map into the air. Ethan recognized the
constellation-like threads from the book, but this time, the map zoomed into a
single glowing point. Beneath it, a name appeared: Eryndor’s Hollow.
"The
journey will test your resolve," the Keeper warned. "The forces that
seek to destroy the Nexus are watching. Trust the book—it will guide and
protect you."
Ethan
swallowed hard, nodding. "I’ll do whatever it takes."
The
Keeper’s form flickered, their presence fading. "Remember, the Nexus chose
you for a reason. Do not lose sight of your purpose."
The
chamber dissolved into golden light, and Ethan found himself standing once more
in the library. The book thudded softly in his bag, as though acknowledging the
Keeper’s words.
Eryndor’s
Hollow. The name pulsed in his mind like a beacon. He didn’t know how he would
get there or what awaited him, but the Watcher was his only hope of unraveling
the secrets of the Nexus—and saving it from destruction.
For
the first time, Ethan felt the weight of destiny settle on his shoulders, both
daunting and exhilarating. With determination burning in his chest, he stepped
into the night, ready to begin the next chapter of his journey.
