Chapter 4: Threads of the Nexus
The weight of the book in Ethan’s bag was more
than physical—it was a tether to a world he could scarcely begin to fathom. As
he walked through the dimly lit corridors of Brightwood Academy, his thoughts
raced. What did the Keeper mean by ‘forces that seek to destroy’? And why had
the Nexus chosen him?
The hum of the hallway lights felt oppressive.
Ethan ducked into his dorm room, shutting the door firmly behind him. He pulled
the book out, its surface gleaming faintly even in the dark. Placing it on his
desk, he hesitated. What would happen if he opened it again?
The sigil on the cover pulsed, a soft rhythm that
seemed to sync with his heartbeat. Summoning his courage, he flipped it open.
The pages filled instantly with lines of glowing text and intricate diagrams
that seemed to breathe, shifting like living entities.
A particular diagram caught his eye—a
constellation-like map connecting countless points of light, each pulsating
softly. A single thread stretched from the center to the edge, where it frayed
and fragmented.
As he traced the thread with his finger, the book
emitted a low hum. The Keeper’s voice resonated faintly in his mind: "The
threads connect worlds, each point a nexus of knowledge. But some threads are
breaking—severed by those who would unravel the tapestry of existence."
A chill crept over him. “How am I supposed to
stop that?” he muttered. The book didn’t answer, but the map shifted, zooming
in on a point that glowed brighter than the others. Beneath it, faint words
formed: “Seek the Watcher.”
The hum intensified, and suddenly, the room was
bathed in a golden light. Ethan shielded his eyes as the air around him seemed
to ripple. When he lowered his hand, the light had vanished, and the book lay
closed, its sigil darkened.
He stared at it, heart pounding. Somewhere out
there, a Watcher awaited, and with them, answers he desperately needed. But the
Keeper’s warning echoed in his mind: knowledge demands sacrifice.
He exhaled, steeling himself. Tomorrow, he would
begin his search. The threads of the Nexus were fraying, and the burden of
mending them had fallen to him.
